DEP Issued Do-Not-Use Water Order LIFTED July 25, 2024

DEP Issued Do-Not-Use Water Order LIFTED

July 25, 2024

Following MassDEP and West Springfield DPW Water Division’s investigation of the consumable water in the area of Heywood Ave the Do-Not-Use Order has been lifted.

The Do-Not-Use Order was implemented in the Heywood Ave area on July 23rd, 2024 after reports of an oily substance in the water at two businesses in the area. The discharge of this substance into the water was a result of a cross connection event. Cross connection events occur when water from a private plumbing system is pushed or siphoned back into the city water main. A backflow protection device has been installed to prevent future events in this area. Backflow devices prevent contaminants present in private water systems from getting into the public water supply. These types of events can pose public health issues to our consumable water which is why Mass DEP and the Town of West Springfield took a cautious approach for residents.

At this time the consumable water in the Heywood Ave area has been cleared as safe for drinking and other normal usage.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the West Springfield DPW Water Division during business hours at 413-263-3242.
