SMPD Arrests Juvenile on Probation in Possession of a Ghost Gun During a Disturbance
San Mateo, CA – Last night, July 24, 2024 at 11:54pm, San Mateo Police officers were dispatched to the unit block of W. 25th Ave. on report of a disturbance where several people were gathered in the roadway and one was reported to be holding a gun. When officers arrived, they noticed a large group run from the scene. One subject was detained after a short foot pursuit and an unloaded, unserialized handgun (aka “ghost gun”) was found on his person.
A records check revealed the subject, a 17-year-old, was on probation for a previous robbery conviction. He was ultimately arrested, transported and booked into Hillcrest.
All firearms must bear a serial number and be registered to be considered legal. Unserialized firearms are illegal to possess. Ghost guns are firearms that can be made at home from parts that can be purchased without background checks and are unregistered.
