A partnership between the Wilmington Police Department and ChristianaCare, the Wilmington Partners in Care Program pairs trained mental health clinicians with police officers, who respond as a team to calls for service and conduct proactive outreach to support those in need in our community. Our program was launched in March, and includes a case manager and two clinicians.
During the second quarter of the year – from April 1 through June 30 – the Wilmington Partners in Care team provided services to a total of 87 individuals. That is in addition to the 5 individuals who received support from the program in late March, in the initial days of the program – and before it became fully staffed in mid-April. Clinician contacts were initiated through calls for service, as well as proactive outreach and referrals from the community, police officers and the WPD Victim Services Unit and Youth Response Unit.
“We are proud to share some initial data that confirm what we were always confident would be the case: that our co-responder program is already having a positive effect in the community,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “We appreciate everything that the members of our team are doing to support our residents, and look forward to seeing this program continue to grow.”
The progress report includes a breakdown of those who have been supported by the program, as well as some examples of the assistance that the team has provided to individuals and families in times of need. The program will continue to issue quarterly progress reports to share data and other programmatic developments.
Since its inception in March, the Partners in Care Program has become fully staffed and is carrying out its mission. Members of the team have received training, developed relationships with outreach partners and have begun participating in community events and programs like the Wilmington Police Department’s Community Resource Fair series and weekly Wilmington Community Outreach Walks. Police officers have also received briefings on the program, and have had the chance to see firsthand the benefits of embedding clinicians within our department and responding together to calls for service.
