The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to developing transportation solutions that best balance transportation needs, the environment, community concerns and cost. Along the Route 1 corridor, construction is underway preparing the roadway to accommodate a Hard Shoulder Running (HSR) lane. The project’s purpose is to improve the flow of vehicular traffic by utilizing the right shoulder as a travel lane on weekdays during rush hour travel times. Upon activation of the HSR lanes, the NJDOT will be evaluating and comparing before and after conditions.

The HSR pilot activation is set to begin in late August 2024. The HSR will allow motorists to utilize designated lanes Monday through Friday from 6am to 10am and from 4pm to 7pm.
