SMPD Investigating Shooting Incident

A verbal argument leads to a man being assaulted with a metal pipe and another shot.

San Mateo, CA – On August 2, 2024, at 7:53 a.m., San Mateo Police Department received a 911 call from a person about a disturbance.  The caller was frantic and said a suspect had crashed into his car and the suspect had been shot with a firearm.  Multiple officers responded to the area with emergency lights and sirens activated.  The reporting party gave the incorrect location, however after a few minutes, SMPD officers located the crime scene near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grant Street.

When officers arrived, they located the victim and a witness at the crime scene.  As the investigation unfolded, officers learned the suspect, drove a U-Haul box truck to where the victim had parked his car and a verbal argument started between the victim and suspect.  The suspect returned to the U-Haul truck and retrieved a large metal pipe, striking the victim multiple times with the pipe in the head and arms.  The victim had a .22 caliber pistol and shot the suspect.  The suspect stopped attacking the victim and returned to his truck, placed the truck in reverse and drove at the victim, almost running him over and colliding with the victim’s car, before fleeing the scene.  The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical attention and was later released.

The suspect drove to Palo Alto and was located at a hospital in the area.  The suspect remains in stable condition.

We are still investigating this crime and ask if anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact Detective Malott at the San Mateo Police Department.

Once the police arrive at the scene, cooperate fully, and provide the officers with all the information you have.  Your observations can greatly assist law enforcement in their investigation.
