Weather Update #1: Tropical Storm Debby

Tropical Storm Debby presents the possibility of significant impacts across our area on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6 as the storm lands in Florida and turns northeastward over southern Georgia and the Carolinas.

There are no evacuations or road/causeway closures planned at this time. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated.

GDOT is monitoring wind conditions for the Sidney Lanier Bridge, and any potential closures will be announced as they are known.

CLOSURES
The Jekyll Island Authority will be closing the following facilities on Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, as follows:

  • Jekyll Island Tennis Center
  • Jekyll Island Mini Golf & Bikes
Normal operations are expected to resume for these JIA facilities on Wednesday, August 7, unless otherwise communicated. All other facilities will remain open at this time. Any additional closures will be announced as necessary.

Waste Management has confirmed they will continue with normal pickup on Monday, August 4 but expect delays on Tuesday, August 6, and Wednesday, August 7. Please secure trash receptacles when they are not on the street for pickup. More information will be communicated on any potential delays or changes to schedules as it becomes available.

Glynn County is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch and a Flood Watch. There is a high potential for flash flooding/heavy rainfall, tropical-storm-force winds, and tornado threats. Due to the expected slow motion of the storm, a lengthy period of impact is anticipated and could last several days. This includes potential power outages.

Please use today, Sunday, August 4, to make preparations including storm supplies, food, water, medication refills, pet supplies, etc.

Please continue to pay close attention to weather updates as they are made available, and follow the latest forecast models from the National Weather Service Jacksonville to stay informed between updates.
