Tropical Storm Debby Update 8/4/24

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING and FLASH FLOOD WATCH remain in effect.

Except for emergency services, all City of High Springs offices will be CLOSED tomorrow, August 5th. At this time, WastePro trash collection WILL run as scheduled.

Alachua County has issued an evacuation order for those residing in mobile homes, manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, and homes that may not survive the storm, as well as those living in areas subject to flooding or in proximity to bodies of water. This Order shall take effect immediately and remain in effect until lifted.

We encourage residents affected to find alternative housing with friends, family, or short-term rentals. Shelters are a last resort. Alachua County is opening three shelters for residents in need.

The County has opened:

Two general, pet-friendly population shelters:

The Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center (1028 NE 14th St., Gainesville)

The Easton-Newberry Sports Complex (24880 NW 16th Ave., Newberry)

A special needs shelter:

The Alachua County Senior Recreation Center (5701 NW 34th Blvd., Gainesville)

Alachua County Public Schools will provide meals to individuals who stay at the shelters.

Those needing more information about the special needs shelter should call 352-955-2575. Those needing transportation to the special needs shelter should call as soon as possible.

Excessive rainfall and flooding are the primary concerns. Scattered power outages are also likely.

Due to the expected slow motion of Debby, a lengthy period of moderate to heavy rain is expected.

Current rainfall predictions call for 6-12 inches. If Debby slows, those numbers will likely increase.

Flood potential exists, especially in low-lying areas and poor drainage locations. Homes and roads can be inundated, and roads can be flooded and washed out.

Moderate flooding along the Santa Fe River is forecast, with major flooding possibly occurring over the next several days.

Conditions will deteriorate slowly later this afternoon and evening as rain bands gradually work into the region. The heaviest rain will fall on Monday and Tuesday.
