Weather Update #3: Tropical Storm Debby
The Jekyll Island Authority has declared a State of Emergency in conjunction with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's State of Emergency, and the City of Brunswick and Glynn County, effective Monday, August 5, at 3:30 p.m., and will remain in effect until it expires on Thursday, August 8, at 11:59 p.m., unless renewed.
The Executive Order has vested the Jekyll Island State Park Authority Executive Director with the authority in the event of an emergency to take such actions and to issue reasonable orders as necessary to promote and secure the safety and protection of the public on Jekyll Island.
As weather conditions continue to deteriorate from Tropical Storm Debby, the island is expected to experience significant rainfall, leading to the potential of flash flooding, downed trees, power outages, and the threat of tornadoes. Storm conditions are anticipated to increase later this evening into Tuesday, as the storm passes the southeastern coast of Georgia.
The following facilities will remain closed through Tuesday, August 6:
CLOSURES
- JIA Administrative Offices
- Jekyll Island Convention Center
- Jekyll Island Guest Information Center (entry gate attendant will remain on duty)
- Jekyll Island Campground
- Jekyll Island Tennis Center
- Jekyll Island Mini Golf & Bikes

There are no evacuations or road/causeway closures planned at this time. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated. However, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay indoors. Do not attempt to travel roadways. Heavy rainfall may lead to falling trees and powerlines. Do not attempt to cross roads covered by water due to risks of debris and downed power lines. Emergency services may be limited pending storm conditions.
GDOT is monitoring wind conditions for the Sidney Lanier Bridge, and any potential closures will be announced as they are known.
Waste Management has halted pickup through Tuesday, August 6. They will communicate a new pickup schedule as it is known. Please properly secure all trash receptacles away from roadways.
Please continue to pay close attention to weather updates as they are made available, and follow the latest forecast models from the National Weather Service Jacksonville to stay informed between updates.
