Help Protect Our Waterways from Stormwater Runoff

Let's talk about stormwater runoff and how we can all help keep our waterways clean and healthy!

What is Stormwater Runoff? Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation flows over the ground. Surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, and streets prevent it from naturally soaking into the ground.

Why is Stormwater Runoff a Problem? Stormwater can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants, flowing into storm sewers or directly into our lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, and coastal waters. Anything that enters the storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing, and drinking.

Effects of Pollution:

  •  Bacteria can wash into swimming areas and create health hazards, often making beach closures necessary.
  • Debris like plastic bags, bottles, and cigarette butts can harm aquatic life.
  • Household hazardous wastes like insecticides, paint, and motor oil can poison aquatic life and pose health risks to humans and animals.
Stormwater Pollution Solutions:
Residential:
  • Use commercial car washes or wash your car on your lawn to prevent runoff.
  • Repair leaks and dispose of auto fluids and batteries at designated drop-off locations.
  • Always pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly to prevent harmful bacteria from entering storm drains.
Commercial:
  • Sweep up litter and debris from sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots, especially around storm drains.
  • Keep grease storage and dumpsters covered and clean to avoid leaks.
  • Report any chemical spills to the local hazardous waste cleanup team.
Construction:
  • Divert stormwater away from disturbed areas on construction sites.
  • Install and maintain sediment and erosion controls like silt fences and vegetative cover.
  • Minimize disturbed areas during construction and seed and mulch bare areas as soon as possible.
If you see illegal dumping or an illicit discharge, please contact the City of New Port Richey Code Enforcement office at 727-841-4550.
Together, we can protect our environment and keep our community clean!
