During morning commute hours on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, officers from the Newark Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation supported by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in continued efforts to ensure that vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians can safely share our roadways.

The Newark Police Department received $68,000 in grant funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the California Office of Traffic Safety. This funding allows us to conduct operations to raise traffic safety awareness.

Today’s operation focused on pedestrian safety as Newark schools go back in session tomorrow. During this operation, non-uniformed personnel of the Newark Police Department crossed streets in marked pedestrian crosswalks while officers monitored drivers’ compliance. The Pedestrian Safety Operation resulted in the issuance of 59 pedestrian right-of-way violations and several warnings.

Officers who participated in the Pedestrian Safety Operation used this opportunity to speak with motorists and educate drivers regarding pedestrian rights-of-way and other associated traffic laws. If a pedestrian is attempting to use a crosswalk, slow down and yield to allow them a safe opportunity to cross the street. Drivers should be especially cautious and prepared to stop in school zones.

We’d like to thank the Office of Traffic Safety for their assistance and collaboration, which have allowed us to successfully carry out these traffic safety operations. We’d also like to thank all attentive drivers who stop to allow pedestrians to cross the street safely.
