Location: 400 Block Broadway, Redwood City

On July 31^st, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Redwood City Police Officers responded to a residence in Redwood City on the report of a 14 year old girl returning to her residence intoxicated.  Through their investigation, officers discovered the 14 year old (Confidential Victim) and her 13 year old friend (Witness) walked to a parking garage to consume alcohol.
 
During their time in the garage, they encountered Redwood City resident George Bautista Zarate (32), who was walking through the garage with his dog.  Bautista Zarate is a Registered Sex Offender, pursuant to California Penal Code 290.  During their encounter Bautista Zarate provided the children with marijuana and encouraged their alcohol consumption.  Eventually, the Witness left to go home leaving the Confidential Victim and Bautista Zarate in the parking garage.
 
Bautista Zarate then sexually assaulted the Confidential Victim.  The Confidential Victim was able to distract Bautista Zarate and stop the assault, but not before Bautista Zarate offered to provide the Confidential Victim cocaine.  The Confidential Victim returned to her residence and was able to provide officers with a detailed description of Bautista Zarate.
 
Officers were able to locate a possible identification match for Bautista Zarate and further investigation led RCPD Detectives to his residence.  Detectives authored a search warrant for Bautista Zarate’s apartment and located several items of evidence linking him to the sexual assault. 
 
Bautista Zarate was contacted shortly after the search warrant service and arrested. He was booked into the San Mateo County Main Jail for the following charges: Penal Code 220(a)(2) – Sexual Assault Person Under 18; Penal Code 289(e) – Sexual Assault with Intoxicated Person; Penal Code 287(b)(2) – Oral Copulation of Minor; Penal Code 288(c)(1) – Lewd Acts with Minor and Person is More Than 10 Years Older; Penal Code 272(1)(1) – Contribute to the Delinquency of a Minor; Health and Safety Code 11361(b) – Furnish cannabis to minor.
