Tropical Storm Debby
Tropical Storm Debby
The Maplewood Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby. Although the latest reports from the National Weather Center project that the storm will pass to the west of New Jersey, we do anticipate significant rainfall in Maplewood starting on Friday. Severe thunderstorms are also forecast for our area.
The Department of Public Works has taken precautionary measures to clean drainage areas where floods have occurred in the past. Catch basin inlets have been cleaned and street sweepers have been deployed to remove debris from streets. Prior to the storm, if you see a catch basin inlet that needs cleaning, please call the DPW at 973-762-1175.
During the storm, Township Departments will be prepared to address problems that arise. Please call the Maplewood Police Department at 973-762-1234 to report flooding, fallen trees, downed wires, and other storm related problems.
If electrical power is lost, please call PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). Do not touch any downed wires or downed trees with wires in them.
We are concerned about the saturated ground from recent rains. Trees in saturated soil are prone to uprooting, as their roots cannot anchor trees into the ground. If a tree is uprooted, call the police at 973-762-1234 to report its location. If a tree takes down any wires, stay away. Do not touch any downed wires or downed trees with wires in them. If a tree is downed with wires, no work can be done until PSE&G cuts the power. The Police and DPW will coordinate with PSE&G to handle these types of situations.
If you need emergency shelter or a cooling center, call the police at 973-762-1234.
Call 911 to report a health or medical emergency or a fire.
During the storm the OEM will monitor the situation and may issue additional alerts.
