Bike Lanes on Broad Avenue - Discussion Monday 8/19, 7:30pm
Over the last few years, the Borough of Leonia has undertaken a Complete Streets program including repaving of Broad Avenue, bump-outs to make pedestrian crossing easier and safer and restriping to create bike lanes. The bike lanes installed on Broad Avenue currently are exterior bike lanes (between the traffic and street parking).
As you know from the Mayor's most recent status update, the Borough is considering protected bike lanes from Lakeview to Harrison and from Crescent to Oakdene. Protected Bike lanes are placed between parked cars and the curb - since cyclists are physically isolated from moving vehicles, it dramatically reduces accidents for both cars and cyclists. But it comes with pluses and minuses.
The Borough will implement bike lanes -- the question is whether they should be protected or exterior bike lanes. This will be presented for discussion and resolution at the Borough Council meeting, Monday August 19th, 7:30pm at the Municipal Center. The public is welcome to weigh in.
