Wilmington Police, victim services partners announce September 12 Community Resource Fair and Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims event:

As the Wilmington Police Department continues its monthly Community Resource Fair series, our next program will be held outdoors on Thursday, September 12 from 4-6 p.m. in Kirkwood Park (1205 Kirkwood Street).

In collaboration with our victim services partners – including the Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force and the WPD Victim Services Unit – this month’s program will include our annual Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.

“As we continue to bring together resource providers and members of our community through this monthly series, we look forward to integrating our annual Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims for a second year,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “Victim services professionals in Wilmington and throughout Delaware provide outstanding service and support to those affected by crime and violence, and we are happy to partner with them for this important annual tribute to those who have been killed across Delaware.”

This program will include a range of partner organizations offering free resources to the public, as well as victim services groups and others seeking to support individuals and families who have been affected by crime and violence.

“In solidarity with the National Day of Remembrance, held in September, the Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force holds an annual Day of Remembrance to honor the memory of murder victims from communities right here in the First State. Please join us to support the family and friends of the victims of these unspeakable crimes and to acknowledge the lasting impact on their lives and on our communities,” said Erin Young, Victim Services Program Manager for the Delaware Department of Correction, and a member of the Victims’ Rights Task Force. “The VRTF would like to thank Wilmington Police for partnering with us on this event for the second year in a row.”

In addition to bringing together social service, public health, governmental and nonprofit partners for this two-hour event, we will also organize a Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims program beginning at 5:30 p.m., with speakers and a presentation.

“The Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims is an important event that honors the lives of those lost to violence,” said Stephanie Hamilton, WPD Victim Services Unit supervisor.  “By creating a space for people gather we hope to help in the healing process, reminding us that no one should face their pain alone.”

Since the launch of this as a monthly series in 2023, events have been held at the Police Athletic League of Wilmington, the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center, the MSK Community Center, Latin American Community Center, Helen Chambers Park, Cool Springs Park, Haynes Park, Judy Johnson Park, Herman Holloway, Sr. Park, Kosciuszko Park, Tilton Park and Joe White Memorial Park.

In the event of inclement weather, the rain date for this event will be Thursday, September 19, at the same time and location.

This event is free and open to the public, and there will be food and plenty of public safety-related giveaways.

Pre-registration for partners/vendors is required, and is limited to government and nonprofit organizations providing free services to Wilmington residents. Partners seeking to register can contact David Karas at [email protected].
