Jersey Avenue to close next week; Sinatra waterfront walkway update; Multi-Service hockey rink construction to begin

Jersey Avenue closures planned for next week

Contractors for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will be conducting test pitting on Jersey Avenue on Monday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Aug. 23, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. During working hours, Jersey Avenue will be closed between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City.

Detours will be in place, and digital messaging signs will be positioned to alert drivers. Hoboken and Jersey City Police Officers will be on site to assist with traffic control and pedestrian safety. Drivers are encouraged to leave extra travel time and consider using northern routes to and from Hoboken during work hours.

The road work is part of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Rebuild By Design Hudson River Project – Resist Alignment Coastal Defense construction. Schedules may change due to unforeseen weather or subsurface conditions.

Daily updates on road closures and parking restrictions can be found on the Hoboken OEM X page: @HobokenOEM. Weekly construction schedules, along with the City's new interactive construction map, can be found online at https://www.hobokennj.gov/construction.

Waterfront walkway inspections continue

The City is continuing in-depth inspections of the waterfront walkway following the discovery of a sinkhole near Sybil’s Cave which was temporarily fixed. To ensure public safety, additional waterfront areas have been closed as a precautionary measure. Diving inspections and ground-penetrating radar activities have been completed, and geotechnical investigations will be scheduled in the coming weeks. The results of these investigations will inform the engineering design for permanent rehabilitation of certain waterfront structures. Once the investigations are complete, a determination will be made on when the affected areas can be reopened to the public.

The City will continue to provide regular updates as more information from the ongoing investigations becomes available. More information can also be found at www.hobokennj.gov/construction

Construction on Multi Service Center hockey rink improvements begins Monday

On Monday, Aug. 19, construction will begin on the rehabilitation of the City's “Johnny Ray McDonald, Jr. ‘Diddle’ Hockey Rink” at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St. thanks to a partnership with the New Jersey Devils. Improvements include removal and disposal of the old boarding system, patching and leveling of the rink surface, installation of a dasher board curb footing and a new dasher board , new rink flooring and more.

The rink will be closed starting on Monday, Aug. 19, for approximately three weeks. Construction will occur on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For safety reasons, the spray pad next to the rink will also close during construction.

The community will be advised of any parking restrictions via Temporary No-Parking signs at least 3 days in advance.

Weekly construction schedules can be found online at www.hobokennj.gov/construction. Please note, schedules may change due to unforeseen weather or subsurface conditions.
