San Mateo Police Department and Bay Area Law Enforcement Partners Embark on Civil Rights Journey with the Sojourn Project
San Mateo Police Department Joins Sojourn Project, Retraces Historic Freedom Riders' Route with Bay Area Law Enforcement Partners
San Mateo, CA – This weekend, members of the San Mateo Police Department, along with other Bay Area law enforcement agencies, will set out on a profound journey through history as we participate in the Sojourn Project. Officers will retrace the trail of the historic Freedom Riders, beginning in Atlanta, GA, and concluding in Memphis, TN. Along the way, the group will make stops in Birmingham, AL, and Hattiesburg, MS. All four cities played pivotal roles in the Civil Rights Movement.
The Sojourn Project is an educational initiative that immerses participants in the history of civil rights, fostering a deeper understanding of social justice issues. By walking in the footsteps of the Freedom Riders, our officers, alongside those from the San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Sheriff's Department, San Francisco District Attorney's Office, and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, will gain invaluable insights into the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for equality during a critical time in American history.
"We are honored to take part in this journey with our law enforcement partners," said Ed Barberini, San Mateo Police Chief. "Understanding our history is key to shaping our future, and this experience will undoubtedly deepen our commitment to serving all members of our community with fairness and integrity."
This opportunity has been made possible through funds obtained from asset forfeiture, which have been allocated to support educational and community-building initiatives within the department. The San Mateo Police Department is committed to using these resources to foster learning and growth among our officers, ensuring that they are well-equipped to serve and protect our diverse community.
