Law Enforcement Activity in Railroad Flat
On the evening of August 20, 2024, Calaveras County Probation Officers, Sheriff’s Deputies, and allied agencies conducted a series of probation compliance checks on the north side of Calaveras County. During this time, they encountered a suspect with an outstanding warrant for his arrest. This encounter prompted a foot pursuit into a wooded area where deputies lost sight of the subject due to the darkness and dense foliage. Shortly thereafter, one of the deputies reported hearing a gunshot in the immediate vicinity. At this time, it is still unknown whether the suspect fired the shot or if it was unrelated. In response to the situation, deputies established a perimeter and requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol Air Division (helicopter), as well as a Calaveras County Canine unit, to enhance the safety of the search efforts.
While deputies were searching for the suspect, a responding deputy was involved in a solo vehicle accident near the intersection of Railroad Flat Road and Jesus Maria Road. The deputy was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and subsequently released. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, and details are not available at this time.
