Full Notification

Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that on August 22, 2024 at approximately 1157 Hours, his Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on Garrett Rd north of M-62 Hwy., Silver Creek Township, Cass County, Michigan.  
 
The initial investigation showed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Garrett Rd. The vehicle crossed the centerline and left the roadway to the east. The vehicle went down a ditch and rolled before coming to a rest in a field. The driver was initially trapped under the vehicle. The driver was transported by SMCAS Ambulance to and pronounced deceased at the Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital. The passenger of the vehicle was transported by SMCAS Ambulance to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital and refused medical treatment at the hospital. Seat belts were not worn at the time of the crash. Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
 
Assisting agencies on scene were Pokagon Tribal Police Department, Dowagiac Police Department, Indian Lake Fire Department, Indian Lake First Responders, and SMCAS Ambulance.
 
The crash remains under investigation. Names are not being released, pending notification to family.
