SMPD Provides Update on Ongoing Investigation

UPDATED INFORMATION - August 29, 2024
On August 22, 2024, at approximately 6:30 PM, the Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) was notified of a potential attempted kidnapping at Tunnell School. The incident has prompted an extensive investigation by the SMPD, in close collaboration with the Santa Maria Bonita School District (SMBSD), to ensure the safety and security of all students, staff, and parents.

The SMPD Detective Bureau has taken over the investigation, which has remained active and ongoing. Investigators have conducted numerous interviews with potential witnesses and involved parties. Additionally, a thorough area canvas has been completed to locate any further witnesses, and a meticulous review of video surveillance footage from the area has been undertaken.

At this time, despite the comprehensive investigative efforts, SMPD detectives have been unable to substantiate any claims that a kidnapping attempt or any other crimes were committed during the incident. Importantly, there does not appear to be any related threat to the public.

The Santa Maria Police Department and the Santa Maria Bonita School District will continue to work together closely throughout this investigation and beyond to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for all students, staff, and parents.
