On August 29, 2024, at 7:39 p.m. Gibson County Central Dispatch received a 911 report of a car versus pedestrian on State Road 57 in front of the Dollar General Store located at 1940 South State Road 57 near Oakland City, Indiana.  Multiple law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the scene as well as Oakland City Fire Territory Personnel and medics with the Gibson County Ambulance Service.  Upon arriving Deputies began an accident investigation and determined that a White 2012 GMC Sierra had struck a female who was crossing the roadway.  During the investigation Deputies had probable cause to believe that 36 year old Matthew Richardson, the driver of the GMC was under the influence of an unknown intoxicant.  At that point Deputy Jim Tucker began a OWI investigation.  At the conclusion of his investigation he placed Mr. Richardson into custody and transported him to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Involving Serious Bodily Injury Accident, Possession of Methamphetamines, and Possession of Marijuana.
 
The pedestrian was transported by AirEvac to an area hospital where they remain in critical condition with life threatening injuries. 
 
The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, but are being assisted by the Gibson County Prosecutors Office, The Oakland City Police Department, and Indiana DNR law enforcement division.
 
All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
