Ontario Man Airlifted to Hospital After He Jumps Off Cliff into River Below and Loses Consciousness



DATE/TIME: September 1, 2024

INCIDENT: Near Drowning

LOCATION: Devil's Elbow on the Colorado River, Needles, Ca.

VICTIM(S): 35 yea- old-male from Ontario, CA


SUMMARY: On September 1, 2024, at approximately 5:48 p.m., deputies from the Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit responded to a portion of the Colorado River known as "Devil's Elbow", reference a possible drowning victim.  

A 35-year-old male had jumped off an approximate 50 foot cliff and landed on his back in the water.  The male lost consciousness and did not resurface.  Bystanders recovered the male from under the water and began CPR on a nearby beach.   Members with the Mohave County Sheriff's Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and San Bernardino County Fire Department continued life saving measures while transporting the male subject to Park Moabi. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Air Rescue 308 helicopter landed at peninsula campsite #1 and loaded the male subject aboard for transport to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nv. The male regained consciousness prior to being loaded onto Air Rescue 308 and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit is, as always, dedicated to providing a safe boating atmosphere for the public and reminds everyone to wear their life jackets and to boat sober.
