LOCATION: 87000 Block of National Trails Highway, Amboy
SUMMARY: On Monday, September 2, 2024, at approximately 12:26 p.m., deputies assigned to the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station responded to the 87000 Block of National Trails Highway in Amboy for a report of a small plane which crashed into the desert area near the roadway.
Deputies along with personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department, officers from the California Highway Patrol, and rangers from the California State Park Police responded to the location. The Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station coordinated the crash investigation with officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board. The investigation showed the pilot and one passenger had landed their Cessna 152 airplane near Roy's Café in Amboy the morning of Monday, September 2, 2024. A short time later, the pilot taxied the plane onto the pavement of National Trails Highway and accelerated westbound down roadway for takeoff. The plane became airborne, but the starboard wing of the plane had not gained enough altitude and struck a street caution sign. The plane overturned, rolled multiple times and came to rest in a desert field. The pilot and passenger extricated themselves from the Cessna and were not injured during the crash.
