40 Cited / 1 arrested at Berkeley DUI / Driver License Checkpoint
On August 29, 2024, the Berkeley Police Department conducted a DUI and driver license checkpoint on University Avenue at Acton Street.
920 drivers were contacted at the checkpoint. 40 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, 1 driver was arrested for failing to comply with the checkpoint and obstructing officers. An additional 15 drivers were evaluated for DUI and released.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are conducted to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
