Scam alert involving fraud/impersonating officers over the phone
Please be aware that there is recent scam/fraud occurring in multiple counties including Monmouth County. Criminals are placing phone calls claiming to be officers from the Sheriff's Office, seeking payment for fake warrants. They have been using names of real officers as well as spoofing their caller ID to appear to be a legit law enforcement number in order to fool victims. They are also leaving callback numbers that lead to a fake voicemail that mimicks the Sheriff's Office automated phone system.
If you receive any calls such as these, please hang up immediately and call your local police department. Do not call the number the scammers provide, and instead call the correct public listed number. Middletown Police can be reached at 732-615-2100. The phone number for the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office is 732-431-6400. Law enforcement will NEVER take or request payment for bail over the phone or out in public, and will NEVER request payment via gift cards, Apple Pay, or crypto currency of any kind. Payments for bail can only be made in person at a court, or at a police department if the court is closed.
Instructions:
Do not send any electronic payments for bail.
