WEST SPRINGFIELD URGES RESIDENTS TO PLAN AHEAD FOR THE BIG E
West Springfield, MA: On Friday September 13, the Eastern States Exposition will begin its seventeen day run of the Big E Fair which will conclude on Sunday, September 29. Recognized as the fifth largest fair in North America, the Big E has been held on Memorial Avenue in West Springfield for 108 years. The Big E brings over a million visitors to West Springfield over the course of the fair, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
Due to the increased travel density in the area, the Town has implemented several temporary traffic measures to mitigate the congestion in the Memorial Ave corridor. Attached is a map of the traffic measures that will be in place for the duration of the fair, from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 29, 2024.
While the temporary measures have improved circulation over the past several years, there will still be traffic in the area and the Town recommends that residents plan accordingly. Generally, traffic from the fair in the Memorial Avenue and Central Business District areas is most significant on the weekend and at night. If you need to travel to the area, it is recommended to do so on weekdays during the day or before 10:00 a.m. on the weekends. Many local businesses in the Memorial Avenue corridor remain open during the fair and the Town encourages residents to continue to support those businesses.
The Big E is an agricultural fair that was established in 1916 by Joshua Brooks. The fair has since grown to include both local and international vendors of goods, regional and international food and beverage vendors, rides and entertainment. All students of West Springfield Public Schools will receive a free admission ticket for “West Springfield Day” at the fair on Monday, September 16 and we hope to see many residents take advantage of this to celebrate the Town and the Big E’s longstanding partnership.
