IMPD Detectives Vehicle Shot While Trying to Serve a Warrant for Evidence

IMPD Detectives Vehicle Shot While Trying to Serve a Warrant for Evidence

IMPD Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) detectives were looking for a known individual, with a valid warrant to obtain evidence, when a detective’s vehicle was fired upon from suspect’s vehicle.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, just after 10 p.m., IMPD VCU detectives and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers were looking to serve a warrant for evidence related to a criminal investigation. Detectives located the suspect, who was driving in the area of East 10th Street and Rural Street. A total of four people were in the car and detectives observed all of them wearing masks. A VCU detective was conducting surveillance on the individuals, in an unmarked vehicle, when shots were fired from the suspect’s vehicle, striking the detective’s vehicle in the 1600 block of N Olney Street. VCU detectives continued to monitor the vehicle and within minutes, SWAT officers apprehended four suspects, three adults and one juvenile, without further incident, from the suspect’s vehicle. Four firearms were also located within the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle was also seized and towed pending further investigation.

Occupants of the vehicle were transported to the homicide office for further questioning and at least one involved individual was arrested on a warrant for unrelated charge and the juvenile was arrested for dangerous possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The other two individuals were released upon completion of the interviews.

Detectives and officers on scene also learned of a residence being struck by gunfire during the incident, causing damage to the home.

No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured in this incident. No officers fired their service weapons during the incident.

Evidence was collected on scene.

The suspect’s vehicle was towed, pending further investigation.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was called to the scene to conduct a separate and independent investigation. IMPD North and East District officers were on scene to assist with securing the crime scene. The Marion County Forensic Services Agency was on scene to assist in the criminal investigation.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decisions.

This is preliminary information and subject to change. This remains an ongoing investigation.

Night Watch was on scene and provided sound for the media.
