INCIDENT: Vehicle vs Pedestrian Fatal Traffic Crash
LOCATION: State Highway 18/ Flathead Road, Apple Valley, CA
PEDESTRIAN: Unidentified 18–20-year-old male (Deceased)
DRIVER 1: Nicholas Harris, 31-year-old, Resident of Apple Valley
VEHICLE 1: Silver Kia Optima
SUMMARY: On Monday, September 16, 2024, at approximately 2:54 a.m., deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station and rescue personnel from the Apple Valley Fire Department responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash that occurred on State Highway 18 and Flathead Road, in the town of Apple Valley.
Through investigation, deputies determined a silver Kia Optima, driven by Nicholas Harris, drove westbound on State Highway 18 in the number one lane, approaching Flathead Road. The pedestrian (unidentified male) was walking westbound on State Highway 18 in the roadway between lanes when the Kia struck the pedestrian from behind.
The pedestrian suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the Kia Optima was uninjured and remained on scene to cooperate with the investigation.
An investigator from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) arrived and is conducting an investigation. State Highway 18 westbound lanes were closed between the intersections of Flathead Road and Dale Evans Parkway for approximately two and one-half hours, while deputies processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses.
