Wilmington Police charge woman in connection with fatal assault:
Wilmington Police have charged a woman in connection with a fatal assault.
On September 3 at approximately 7:27 p.m., police were called to a residence in the 400 block of South Jackson Street to conduct a welfare check regarding an elderly female. Responding officers gained entry to the residence and located 89-year-old Leonor Gonzalez-Ortiz, who was deceased.
The case was assigned to Detective Justin Kane of the Criminal Investigations Division, and the investigation continued in conjunction with the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences – which determined that she had been assaulted, resulting in her death.
Through the course of his investigation, 37-year-old Cynthia Viquez was identified as a suspect in connection with the assault. She was taken into custody without incident on September 4 and was initially charged with Assault (First Degree). She was then committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution pending further proceedings.
On September 16, following the investigation by the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences and in conjunction with the Delaware Department of Justice, the charges against Viquez have been updated to the following:
- Murder (First Degree)
- Providing a False Statement to Law Enforcement
