Attempted Burglary / Theft of Motor Vehicle

At 12:30 AM on September 17th, three individuals wearing hooded sweatshirts and gloves exited a dark colored SUV and attempted to steal a BMW that was parked in a driveway in a neighborhood on the North end of Milltown. The three suspects did access the homes garage in an apparent attempt to look for keys but were unsuccessful. The suspects were later observed running away. This incident is currently under investigation by our detective bureau.

Residents are reminded to always lock their vehicles and doors, and to remove key fobs when not in use. Please report any suspicious activity, persons, or vehicles to the police. Your vigilance helps keep our community safe!

Some practical steps you can take to lower the risk of becoming a victim of burglary/theft are:

  1. Install Exterior Lighting
Adequate lighting around your property is a powerful deterrent to burglars. Install motion-activated lighting near entry points, driveways, and other vulnerable areas to illuminate potential hiding spots. Motion sensor lights are an effective way to startle intruders and draw attention to suspicious activity.

  1. Install Video Cameras
Video surveillance is a valuable tool for both prevention and investigation.

  1. Alarm Systems
A reliable alarm system adds an extra layer of protection to your home. Make sure to prominently display signs indicating that your property is monitored, as this can discourage potential burglars.

  1. Trim Back Exterior Brush
Overgrown bushes, trees, and other vegetation can provide cover for burglars. Keep your landscaping well-maintained to eliminate potential hiding spots near windows and entry points.

  1. Lock Gates, Windows, and Doors
It may sound simple, but ensuring that all gates, windows, and doors are securely locked is a fundamental step in preventing break-ins. Regularly check the condition and functionality of locks on all entry points. This includes your personal vehicles. Always lock your doors, do not leave keys or fobs in your vehicle, and consider removing your garage door opener from your vehicle.

  1. Be Mindful of Social Media
Avoid sharing your whereabouts or travel plans on social media, especially if you plan to be away from home. Broadcasting your absence can make your property more susceptible to burglaries.

The Milltown Police Department can assist you by providing you with a Home Security Risk Assessment. If requested, one of our community affairs officers will come to your home, discuss vulnerabilities, and help you come up with options to improve your homes security. To request a risk assessment contact Lt. Carmen DeLorenzo at [email protected] .
