Deputies Identify, Locate and Arrest Fatal Hit and Run Suspect



DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 19, 2024 / 9:47 p.m.

INCIDENT: CVC 20001 - Fatal Hit and Run Traffic Collision

LOCATION: Yucaipa Blvd. and 17th St.., Yucaipa CA

SUSPECT(S): Steven Runyan, 30-year-old Redlands resident

VICTIM(S): 62-year-old resident of Yucaipa


SUMMARY: On Thursday, September 19, 2024, at approximately 9:47 p.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Police Department along with rescue personnel from Yucaipa Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to a call for service in reference to a subject lying in the roadway near Yucaipa Blvd. and 17th St. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased male pedestrian near the north curbline of Yucaipa Blvd. It was determined through investigation the male pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle that fled the scene. The suspect vehicle was determined to be a black 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Deputies located the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as Steven Runyan. Runyan was arrested for felony hit and run and was booked at Central Detention Center and is being held in custody with a $30,000 bail.

Deputies with the Yucaipa Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) as well as detectives from the Yucaipa Police Station responded and assumed the investigation.

The westbound and eastbound lanes of Yucaipa Blvd. remained closed for several hours while deputies conducted their investigation. The roadway was reopened at 2:41 a.m.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this collision or anyone who may have been a witness is asked to contact Deputy S. Navarro or Deputy P.
