On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 12:35pm, Amarillo Police received a call to check on a man walking in traffic on Amarillo boulevard West and Western. One officer contacted the man and while the officer was trying to talk to him, he attacked the officer. Citizens stopped to help. More officers arrived and the suspect ran from officers but was captured a short distance away and taken into custody. The suspect was transported to an area hospital for his injuries. Charges are pending. The officer was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. This case is under investigation by the Violent Crimes Unit.
The Amarillo Police Department wishes to thank everyone who stopped to help the officer. This was a dangerous situation that was made better by the people who stopped and risked their own safety.

This incident is another example of how we are backed up not only by words, but by brave actions of great people who jumped into harm’s way to help out an officer in a dangerous encounter.”
