McDowell County Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Tropical Storm Helene

Marion, NC, September 25, 2024 — In anticipation of the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Helene, McDowell County, along with the City of Marion and the Town of Old Fort, will be under a state of emergency beginning at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. This action has been taken proactively to ensure that local resources and emergency services are fully prepared ahead of the storm's arrival.

Declaring a state of emergency enables local government agencies to expedite preparation and response efforts, while ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. “We urge citizens to take this storm seriously.  If you live near a creek, river, or flood prone area, we urge you to relocate with family or friends until this storm passes and conditions improve.  We are taking these proactive steps now in an effort to protect lives and prevent dangerous water rescues from occurring,” states Will Kehler, emergency services director. The state of emergency allows for the mobilization of resources and personnel, coordination with state and federal agencies, and any necessary assistance to impacted residents.  McDowell County will open an emergency shelter at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday morning at Glenwood Baptist Church located at 155 Glenwood Baptist Church Rd. in Marion.  Residents who need transportation to the shelter should call 828-652-3241 to schedule a pickup from McDowell Transit.  Transportation will not be available during flash flooding.

A Tropical Storm Watch and a Flood Watch is in effect for McDowell County.  Tropical Storm Helene is expected to bring heavy rainfall of 8-10 inches with isolated amounts up to 15 inches, life threatening flash flooding, strong winds, and potential landslides. Residents are advised to take precautions, monitor weather updates, and follow any advisories regarding evacuations, road closures, and public safety measures.

Stay tuned for further updates and continue to prioritize safety during this time.  To sign up for emergency alerts, text 28752 to 888777.
