Hurricane Helene Update #09

HURRICANE HELENE UPDATE #09 | 9/25/24 5:00PM

Alachua County has issued an Evacuation Order for those residing in mobile homes, manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, and homes that may not survive the storm, as well as those living in areas subject to flooding or in proximity to bodies of water.

Weather conditions will begin to deteriorate around midday Thursday, September 26th, lasting through the evening and overnight hours. Conditions are expected to gradually improve during the morning on Friday, though gusty winds are still possible through the day Friday.

Sustained winds 25-35 mph with gusts to 60 mph are possible in the warned area.

An additional 1-3 inches of rain is forecast, with locally higher amounts possible.

Garbage collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Thursday's collection will be on Friday, and Friday's will be picked up on Saturday.

Alachua County has opened three emergency shelters. We encourage residents affected to find alternative housing with friends, family, or short-term rentals. Shelters are a last resort.

The pet-friendly, general population shelters are:

The Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center, 1028 NE 14th Street Gainesville.

The Easton-Newberry Sports Complex, 24880 NW 16th Avenue, Newberry.

The special needs shelter is at the Alachua County Senior Recreation Center, 5701 NW 34th Boulevard, Gainesville.
