Weather Update #2: Hurricane Helene

The Jekyll Island Authority is actively monitoring Hurricane Helene for any impacts to Jekyll Island. Glynn County is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning and the National Weather Services is predicting that our area will remain under a Tropical Storm Warning through early Friday morning as the anticipated hurricane turns northwest over Georgia and into northern Alabama and Tennessee.

CLOSURES
Glynn County Schools will be closed on Thursday, September 26, and are scheduled to reopen on Friday, September 27.

The Jekyll Island Authority will be adjusting operations at the following facilities on Thursday, September 26, as follows:

  • Jekyll Island Golf Club - CLOSING AT 1 PM. No tee times after 10 AM and all carts must be in by 1 PM.
  • Jekyll Island Tennis Center - CLOSING AT 1 PM.
  • Jekyll Island Mini Golf & Bikes - CLOSING AT 1 PM.
  • Historic Trolley Tours - ENDING AT 1 PM. Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum gallery will remain open until 5 PM.

All other Jekyll Island Authority facilities and amenities will operate under normal business hours and all facilities are expected to resume operations on Friday, September 27, unless otherwise communicated.

There is a high potential for tornadoes, tropical storm-force winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, downed trees, and power lines, and isolated power outages during this time. Please begin securing outdoor furniture, yard debris, trash cans, and any objects that could be picked up by wind.

There are no evacuations or road/causeway closures planned at this time. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated.

GDOT is monitoring wind conditions for the Sidney Lanier Bridge, and any potential closures will be announced as they are known. Closures for the Sidney Lanier Bridge do not take place unless winds are sustained over 40 miles an hour. Should a closure take place, the bridge must be inspected after the storm has passed before reopening.
