Hurricane Helene Update #10

A TORNADO WATCH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10PM TONIGHT.
Alachua County will likely experience heavy rain (2-4 inches), flash flooding, and strong Tropical Storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph) with possible Hurricane-force gusts. There is a strong possibility of Tornados.
Weather conditions will begin to deteriorate around 2PM this afternoon, with the worst of the storm forecast for the overnight hours. Conditions are expected to gradually improve during the morning on Friday, though gusty winds are still possible throughout the day Friday.
With the strong winds, power outages and downed trees are likely. Please always assume a downed line is live, and never walk or drive over it. Turn your refrigerator down, and limit how often you open it to preserve perishable foods for as long as possible if your power goes out.
Garbage collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Thursday's collection will be on Friday, and Friday's will be picked up on Saturday. However, this is subject to change.
Alachua County has opened three emergency shelters. We encourage residents affected to find alternative housing with friends, family, or short-term rentals. Shelters are a last resort.
The pet-friendly, general population shelters are:
The Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center, 1028 NE 14th Street Gainesville.
The Easton-Newberry Sports Complex, 24880 NW 16th Avenue, Newberry.
The special needs shelter is at the Alachua County Senior Recreation Center, 5701 NW 34th Boulevard, Gainesville.
The state has partnered with Uber to provide Floridians free rides to shelters in all counties under a state of emergency for Helene. Don’t let a ride stop you and your family from getting to safety:
• Open the Uber app
• Tap Account on the bottom right & tap Wallet
• Add promo code HELENERELIEF
• Up to $35 each way, to and from a state-approved shelter http://www.floridadisaster.org/shelter-status/

Next update this afternoon at 5PM, breaking news at once.
