Crime Alert Bulletin Covering the Weeks of September 9-22, 2024

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Robberies

There were seven robberies during the past two weeks.

On Monday, 09-09-24, at approximately 5:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to Lucky Supermarket on Mission Street on a report of a shoplifting. An employee stated that a suspect entered the store and exited through the self-checkout area without paying for the merchandise. The employee flagged down a security guard and approached the suspect. They got into an altercation, and the suspect fled on Mission Street.

On Tuesday, 09-10-24, at approximately 8:31 p.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Poncetta Drive on a report of a women screaming. The victim stated that as his wife and child entered the elevator and as he was about to enter, the suspect bumped into his shoulder. Words were exchanged between the victim and the suspect. The victim attempted to block the suspect from entering the elevator, but the suspect pushed past him, entered, and ripped off a crossbody lunch bag from his wife. The victim chased the suspect, who swung the lunch bag containing a glass container and struck the victim, causing a small cut to the victim’s hand. The suspect dropped the lunch bag, and brandished a pocketknife, and swung it at the victim. The victim used a yellow wet floor sign to knock the knife out of the suspect’s hand. The victim tried to detain the suspect, but the suspect’s mother intervened, allowing the suspect to escape. Later, officers located the suspect, a 20-year-old Daly City resident, who was booked into jail for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and making threats.

On Thursday, 09-12-24, at approximately 9:10 a.m., a sergeant was flagged down by a Smart & Final manager on Mission Street near Bismark Street. The manager stated that an employee had informed him that a suspect had taken three bags of unpaid merchandise. The manager went outside, caught up to the suspect, and asked him to return the merchandise. The manager stated the suspect rambled and then said, “I have a gun.” The suspect eventually began walking away across Mission Street, at which point the manager flagged down the sergeant. The sergeant asked the suspect to stop, but he continued to walk and then run away. The sergeant ran after the suspect, detained him, and recovered approximately $100 worth of merchandise. The suspect, a 33-year-old San Francisco resident, was arrested and booked into jail for robbery and resisting arrest.

On Saturday, 09-14-24, at approximately 5:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of John Daly Boulevard on a report of a robbery. The victim stated that as he was walking through the BART tunnel, he was confronted by a group of subjects. The group followed the victim and approached him. One of the subjects grabbed and punched the victim multiple times in the face. The suspect then took the victim’s gold chain necklace, ring, pair of shoes, and cell phone before fleeing. Eventually, the suspect was located at the Concord BART station. The suspect, a 16-year-old Daly City resident, was arrested and booked into the Youth Services Center for robbery.

On Monday, 09-16-24, at approximately 4:12 p.m., officers were dispatched to Macy’s at the Serramonte Center on a report of a robbery. A loss prevention officer stated that three suspects entered the store. The first suspect selected two items of clothing and handed them to the second suspect. Both suspects then exited the store without paying for the merchandise. Loss prevention officers confronted the two suspects. The second suspect began punching and kicking, subsequently dropping the two items of clothing onto the floor. Both suspects then entered a vehicle. Meanwhile, a third suspect inside the store, selected a backpack and concealed a tee shirt and pants in it. The third suspect exited the store without paying for the merchandise, which was worth approximately $325. Loss prevention officers approached the third suspect, who began punching, kicking, and attempting to bite the loss prevention staff. At that moment, the first and second suspect returned. The first suspect approached with pliers in his hand, and the second suspect raised the front of his shirt, placed his hand inside of his pants, and verbally threatened the loss prevention officers. All three suspects then fled in a vehicle. A short time later, the vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Junipero Serra Boulevard and John Daly Boulevard. The stolen merchandise was recovered. The victim stated she had $2,000 in an envelope, which she was going to deposit at the ATM. As she was about to deposit the money, she felt someone grab her from behind, wrapping their right arm around her neck and saying in Spanish, “Give me the money.” The victim felt what seemed like a knife being held to her throat with the suspect’s left hand. The suspect grabbed the money, threw the victim to the ground, and then kicked her. The victim’s husband said he heard the suspect’s voice, which sounded like a man’s voice, and described the suspect as 5’2” tall, wearing a black ski mask, a black hooded sweatshirt, and black pants. This investigation is continuing.

An asset protection specialist stated that the suspect entered the store, concealed a black box containing headphones and a speaker worth $40 in a bag, and proceeded toward the exit. The asset protection specialist loudly said, “Concealing items, inventory check,” to notify the suspect that they were aware of the suspect’s actions. The suspect then brandished a hammer and left the store. Officers located the suspect near the intersection of Callan Boulevard and Clarinada Avenue and recovered the stolen merchandise. Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
