Traffic Advisory: Construction on Willow Avenue Bridge announced; 15th Street closure and Observer Hwy. construction continues
Hudson County has informed the City of Hoboken that Hudson County contractors will be conducting emergency repairs on the Willow Avenue Bridge between Hoboken and Weehawken from Tuesday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 4.
According to Hudson County, the project, to repair the bridge expansion joints, will require lane shift and lane width reduction in each direction on Willow Avenue, over the bridge during the work hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project. The City of Hoboken requested that the repairs be conducted during overnight hours, however Hudson County advised the City that the County contractors must conduct the repairs during daytime times.
Drivers and riders of the NJ Transit 126 bus into New York City are encouraged to leave extra time or use alternative mass transit during work hours, as traffic is expected. Hudson County Sheriff’s Deputies will be on site to assist with traffic and pedestrian safety.
As a reminder, 15th Street between Bloomfield and Park Avenue remains closed due to NJDEP construction of the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River project to mitigate coastal storm flooding.

Additionally, in an effort to improve water flow redundancy, the Jersey City Municipal Utility Authority (JCMUA) has informed the City of Hoboken that it will continue construction on Observer Highway to isolate water transmission mains in preparation of an additional water interconnect which will provide redundancy to the City of Hoboken. This work will provide a new, additional water supply connection for the City of Hoboken. The installation of this new interconnection will provide increased resiliency to Hoboken’s water system during routine maintenance and emergency situations.
As a part of the JCMUA project:
- On Monday, Sept. 30, and Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the eastbound and westbound lanes of Observer Highway will be shifted, and vehicular lanes will remain open.
- On Wednesday, Oct. 2, Newark Street between Henderson Street/Marin Boulevard and Madison Street will be closed in both directions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastbound traffic will detour onto Grove Street and Madison Street. Westbound traffic will detour onto Henderson Street.
- On Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4p.m., Henderson Street/Marin Boulevard will be closed from Observer Highway to 18th Street. Traffic will be detoured onto Jersey Avenue and Grove Street.
