Local Law Enforcement Agencies Alert Residents About Fundraising Practices of Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.)
Law enforcement agencies across the Treasure Valley are coming together to inform residents about recent fundraising activities conducted by the organization, Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.).
L.E.A.D. representatives have been seen at various locations throughout the valley, including in front of local businesses, soliciting monetary donations purportedly to support local educational initiatives related to fentanyl awareness, school violence prevention, and anti-bullying programs. Although funds collected by L.E.A.D. are supporting these programs on a national level, they are not directed to any local agency or community initiative. L.E.A.D. is a 501(c)(3) organization based in New Jersey.
“We appreciate the support of organizations that fundraise for law enforcement, but it is crucial for our community to understand where their donations are going,” said Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea. “We urge residents to verify the destination of their contributions. For those interested in supporting local law enforcement directly, please reach out to your local agency to find out how you can contribute effectively.”
When fundraising occurs on private property, the property owner’s permission is required. Local business owners hosting L.E.A.D. representatives are encouraged to inquire further about the organization and verify the intended use of the funds raised.
Nampa Police Chief Joe Huff added, “We understand the community’s desire to support important causes, and we want to ensure that every dollar donated makes a real impact where it is intended. Transparency and accountability in fundraising are vital, and we encourage everyone to carefully consider where their contributions are going.”
Generally, soliciting donations is an activity protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and exempt from local solicitor's license and permit requirements. The person conducting the fundraising activity cannot touch anyone or their vehicle and cannot block the use of a crosswalk, sidewalk, parking lot, or doorway. But otherwise, this activity is legal.
For more information or to inquire about supporting local law enforcement, please contact your local law enforcement agency directly. For more information about L.E.A.D., visit their website at https://www.leadrugs.org/.
