News Release - 2024_10_3_Multiple Structure Fires

The Petaluma Fire Department responded to two separate structure fires last night, just hours apart.

The first fire, at 1115 B Street, was reported by staff at an elderly care facility after they noticed a faint smell of smoke. Upon arrival, firefighters detected the odor but found no visible signs of smoke or fire. After a detailed investigation, they located a small smoldering area in the attic above the kitchen, likely caused by an electrical issue. The fire had affected approximately five feet of ceiling joists and blown-in insulation. Thanks to the quick response, the fire was contained before spreading. Crews spent about an hour pulling down sheetrock and opening a portion of the roof to extinguish the smoldering area fully. Once the fire was out, the building was turned over to the facility’s maintenance team. An evacuation was not necessary, as the fire was far enough from residents' rooms. No injuries were reported, either to the residents or to firefighters.
The Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire. The extent of the damage is currently unknown and will be determined by the building’s owner after further evaluation. The City of Petaluma Building Department, Sonoma County Health Department, and the Fire Prevention Bureau are working with the facility to make necessary repairs.

The second fire, at 200 C Street, was reported by an alarm company due to a water flow alarm. Shortly after units were dispatched, Petaluma Police Department arrived on the scene and reported smoke on the second floor, with fire sprinklers activating. Firefighters found large amounts of water coming from the second floor. They discovered that two sprinkler heads had activated due to a fire involving energized electrical equipment used to power neon signage. The sprinklers quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to a five-foot area. Firefighters shut down the suppression system to stop the water flow, minimizing further water damage. Though the building sustained water damage, fire, and smoke damage was minimal.  Crews worked to remove the bulk of the water until facility maintenance could take over.
The Fire Prevention Bureau is actively investigating the cause of the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or bystanders. The City of Petaluma Building Department, Sonoma County Health Department, and the Fire Prevention Bureau will coordinate with the business to make necessary repairs.

The Petaluma Fire Department would like to thank our residents and businesses for remaining vigilant and attentive to their surroundings. Community safety is a team effort, and we’re proud to collaborate with our community members to ensure the highest level of protection. We encourage everyone to know two ways out of their home or business in case of an emergency and to practice exit drills monthly.
