Weather Update #1: Hurricane Milton

Weather Update #1: Hurricane Milton
As Hurricane Milton moves across the Gulf of Mexico and closer to the west coast of Florida, we are monitoring the impact to Jekyll Island. Hurricane Milton is already a major hurricane and is slated to remain a major hurricane at least upon initial landfall. At this time, our area will begin to feel impacts from the storm system as early as Wednesday afternoon, increasing through the evening and early Thursday.

We are working closely with local emergency management agencies to receive the most up-to-date weather information. At this time, the National Weather Service Jacksonville has confirmed tropical storm force winds, storm surge, coastal flooding, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.

It is strongly recommended Island residents and businesses activate their emergency preparedness plans and begin preparing for the likelihood of prolonged power outages, downed trees, blocked roadways, flooding, and other storm impacts.

Now is the time to fill up your vehicles and gas cans with gas, pick up prescription medicines for you or your pets, and prepare for the potential of limited-to-no power across the island post-storm.

There are no specific facility or road closures at this time. Should closures be necessary, they will be communicated as they are known.

More information will be provided as updates are made available through NOAA and our partnering state and federal agencies.

Instructions:

Follow the latest forecast models from the National Weather Service Jacksonville to stay informed between updates.
