Wilmington Police share news of lengthy prison sentence for final defendant in NorthPak case:

The Wilmington Police Department is sharing the below release, issued by the Delaware Department of Justice, regarding a lengthy prison sentence that resulted from the prosecution of the final defendant included in the NorthPak case.

Final NorthPak defendant sentenced to two life terms plus 163 years in prison

Prosecutors with the Delaware Department of Justice have secured two life sentences plus 163 years for the last remaining defendant in the State’s yearslong case against the violent gang NorthPak, Attorney General Kathy Jennings announced Tuesday.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our fight against violent gangs in Delaware. With the sentencing of Israel Lecompte, we have brought the last defendant in the NorthPak case to justice," said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. "This case, which has spanned several years and resulted in over 150 felony convictions, illustrates our unwavering commitment to holding violent offenders accountable for their actions.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the dedicated law enforcement officers and prosecutors whose tireless efforts made this victory possible; because of their work, one of the worst gangs in Wilmington has been held accountable for the lives they’ve taken and the terror they have caused. Crime is down in Delaware — this is why.”

“This lengthy sentence marks the culmination of our collaborative efforts to hold members of the NorthPak gang responsible for the violence they perpetuated in our communities throughout the region,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “I could not be more proud of our detectives who developed these cases, and appreciative of the strong partnerships with the Department of Justice and our neighboring police departments.”

“These convictions illustrate the importance of our relationships with the Delaware Department of Justice, the Wilmington Police Department, and all of our law enforcement partners,” said Col. Joseph Bloch of the New Castle County Police Department. “I am confident that the results of these investigations send a direct message that if you commit a crime in New Castle County, we will work tirelessly to identify you and serve justice.”

A New Castle County judge sentenced Israel Lecompte, 20, for the following convictions:

  •          2 counts of Murder 1st Degree
  •          14 counts of Reckless Endangering 1st Degree
  •          4 counts of Robbery 1st Degree
  •          1 count of Attempted Assault 1st Degree
  •          1 count of Conspiracy 1st Degree
  •          6 counts of Conspiracy 2nd Degree
  •          15 counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  •          1 count of Theft of a Motor Vehicle
  •          4 counts of Receiving Stolen Property
  •          1 count of Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal
  •          1 count of Illegal Gang Participation
  •          4 counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
  •          6 counts of Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
Prosecutors’ trial victory against Lecompte was the last in a steady march of jury verdicts and guilty pleas against NorthPak since a massive opening indictment was announced June 2021. More than 150 convictions have been secured from defendants Jacari Robinson, Julius Smith, Elijah Coffeild, Greg Wing, J’Shawn Edwards, Caleb Lancaster, Davine Boyce, Isaiah Lecompte, Markevis Clark, Zymir Hynson, DeShonne Moore, Khalil Rodriguez Fitzgerald, Malik Benson, Rashawn George, Dion Young, and Markell Richards. Sentences for NorthPak defendants already exceed four centuries of prison time on top of six life sentences.

Police and prosecutors’ work against violent gangs like NorthPak has been a critical plank in the State’s successful efforts to reduce gun violence. Jennings and law enforcement leaders announced earlier this year that violent crime statewide reached historic lows, including a 20% reduction in gun violence since the pandemic year of 2020 and a 50% reduction in Wilmington homicides over the same period.
