A man was walking down the street vandalizing cars and was arrested. 
 
San Mateo, CA – On October 7, 2024, at 7:24 a.m., San Mateo Police Department received phone calls from multiple people about a male suspect.  The reporting parties said the suspect was walking down the street breaking mirrors and windshields of parked car with a stick on the unit block of South Fremont Street. 
 
The reporting parties did a good job giving our dispatchers a description of the suspect and which way he was walking.  Officers quickly arrived on scene, located the suspect who was identified as Carlos Utan, and safely detained him. 
 
During the investigation, officers spoke to several witnesses and learned Utan was walking down the street and hitting parked cars with a paint roller.  Officers found eight vehicles that Utan had damaged.  The damaged to the vehicles varied between broken side mirrors, broken windshields, and damage to car hoods.  The total amount of damage Utan caused to the vehicles was estimated at almost $9,000.  Utan was arrested for felony vandalism and booked into San Mateo County Jail.    
 
We need the community’s support in reporting crimes and being a good witness.  If you witness a crime, contact police immediately.  Try to remain as calm as possible and do your best to answer questions on the phone.  Remember details such as the suspect’s appearance, clothing, any distinguishing features, and which direction they flee. Once the police arrive at the scene, cooperate fully, and provide the officers with all the information you have.  Your observations can greatly assist law enforcement in their investigation.

594(a)(1) PC- Felony Vandalism.
