Testing Emergency Alerts - Only a Test
This is Only a Test
The Lake County Sheriff OES is performing a test of the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) today, October 8, 2024 between the hours of 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. While testing is intended to be internal, it is possible that it may result in live alerts to the public. This is only a test and no action is necessary.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and the Emergency Alert System (EAS) are both part of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), which is a national system for providing emergency information to the public. WEA alerts are sent to mobile devices as text messages that are limited to 90 characters. EAS alerts are sent to radio, television, cable, and satellite services, and can include longer messages
WEA and EAS are only activated when an immediate life-threatening emergency exists. Testing this system ensures that it is working properly when needed.
