LOCATION: Redlands Boulevard at Richardson Avenue
SUSPECT(S): Jose David Calderon, 35-year-old resident of Redlands
VICTIM(S): City of Loma Linda and County of San Bernardino
SUMMARY: On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Deputy Rogelio Torres was on patrol in the city of Loma Linda when he was flagged down reference a subject in the vacant lot at Redlands Boulevard at Richardson Avenue. The location was previously the drive-in theatre and there were multiple small brush fires burning on the property.
As Torres entered the property, he contacted a subject, later identified as Jose David Calderon. When Torres tried to detain Calderon, Calderon armed himself with a rock and bottle. Calderon threw the items at Torres and ran toward Interstate 10, then toward Mountain View Avenue.
Deputies arrived and set up a perimeter with the assistance of Sheriff’s Aviation. Deputies located Calderon near the eastbound off-ramp of Interstate 10. During the confrontation, Calderon damaged a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department patrol unit before being detained and taken into custody.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Bombs and Arson Division and the Loma Linda Fire Department Fire Investigators responded to the location to assist with the arson investigation. Calderon was booked at Central Detention Center where he remains in custody in lieu of $100,000.00 bail.
