On October 14, 2024, at approximately 5:45 p.m., the Fremont Police Department received 911 calls reporting a vehicle collided with a building on the 44700 block of Old Warm Springs Blvd. Fremont Police Officers arrived on scene and located a vehicle on fire inside of the building. The fire had the potential to extend to the interior of the building, which contained vacant retail space on the first floor and residential apartments on the floors above. The Fremont Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. Firefighters shut off the sprinkler system activation on the first floor and extricated the vehicle from the building. Fremont Police and Fremont firefighters evacuated the residents on the three floors above the unoccupied commercial space in the building due to heavy smoke. Residents were able to return to their units after the smoke cleared and power was re-energized.
The Fremont Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded and assumed the collision investigation. The preliminary investigation reveals the vehicle was traveling south on Old Warms Springs Blvd when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the building. The vehicle then caught fire, which caused heavy smoke to travel throughout the interior of the building. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and drug or alcohol impairment is unknown at this time.
The driver was declared deceased at the scene. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner's Bureau responded to recover the decedent. There were no other injuries reported during this incident.
This is Fremont’s tenth fatal traffic collision in 2024. Six (6) have occurred on Fremont roadways, three (3) have occurred on state routes, and one (1) on private property.
