Sinatra Drive work continues; Changes to traffic pattern announced
Starting the week of Oct. 21, the City will implement temporary traffic pattern changes on Sinatra Drive as part of the ongoing engineering investigation following the June sinkhole discovered near Sybil’s Cave.
On Monday, Oct. 21, through Thursday, Oct. 24, Sinatra Drive, between the gazebo north of Sinatra Park at Seventh Street and Sinatra Drive North, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for striping operations and barricade implementation to convert the west side of Sinatra Drive into two lanes of traffic. Detours will be on Hudson Street and Washington Street. Signs will be posted, and Hoboken Police Officers will be on site to assist with traffic control and pedestrian safety.
While the temporary traffic pattern is in effect, parking will be removed along sections of the west side of Sinatra Drive south of Sinatra Drive North. Pedestrian and bicyclist detours will be put in place, with pedestrian access maintained on the western sidewalk adjacent to Stevens, and cyclists will temporarily share the road with vehicles.
The new traffic pattern will allow the City’s marine engineers to conduct geotechnical borings along the eastern portion of Sinatra Drive that will inform the engineering design for the permanent rehabilitation of certain waterfront structures.
The geotechnical investigation is expected to last until mid-November, followed by engineering design and permitting, which are anticipated to be complete this year. Construction for the permanent rehabilitation of certain waterfront structures is anticipated early next year, followed by construction of the Sinatra Drive Rehabilitation Project.
These temporary traffic changes were made in consultation with key stakeholders, including Hudson County, NJ Transit, Stevens Institute of Technology, the Hoboken City Council, and the City’s departments and divisions of Public Safety, Engineering, Transportation & Parking, and Parks, Recreation, & Public Works.
The City is also working with private property owners with public easements along the northern areas of the waterfront to ensure they complete the necessary inspections and rehabilitation work on certain waterfront structures. Barricades will be removed from these affected areas when certified by their marine engineers.
The City will continue to provide regular updates as more information becomes available.
