Man Arrested After Late Overnight Standoff With SWAT Team

Modesto, CA -

Deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old Modesto resident Christion Xavier Carter after a lengthy standoff with the Special Weapons & Tactics Team.

On Monday, October 21, 2024, at 9:45 pm, a patrol deputy initially tried to conduct a traffic enforcement stop for suspected drunk driving.  The car was seen weaving in and out of its lane.  The driver of the car, later determined to be Christion Carter, failed to yield and led deputies on a pursuit.

During the course of the chase, the driver side-swiped a Stanislaus Fire SUV, as it dangerously drove into opposing lanes of traffic.  Fortunately, nobody was injured during the collision, and Carter continued to evade law enforcement personnel.

The pursuit concluded at the Redwood Apartments located at 2805 Yosemite Blvd in Modesto.  Deputies made contact with a passenger, who was believed to be Carter’s girlfriend.  The driver fled into the apartments and refused to come outside.  Carter was wanted out of the state of Texas for a previously issued narcotics-related warrant.

Based upon information the suspect was armed with a firearm, the SWAT team was activated in order to assist with the service of a search and arrest warrant.  Hostage negotiators were also brought in to assist with peaceful resolution; however, Carter continued to delay by refusing to come outside.

The suspect eventually surrendered, as he was overcome by the deployed tear gas.  No injuries were reported to the suspect, or to any of the on-scene law enforcement personnel.  The arrest came at 2:30 am the following morning.

During the service of the search warrant, deputies located a fully-automatic modified Glock handgun and accompanying ammunition.  Carter is a convicted felon and is prohibited from carrying guns or bullets.

He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for numerous felony and misdemeanor evasion, resisting, delaying, obstructing, outstanding warrants, and weapons-related charges.  All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
