Warrant Uncovers Alligators, Lemurs, Tegus, and More! SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN
In a joint operation, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Game Wardens, Clayton County Animal Control, and the Clayton County Sheriff's Office have dismantled an illegal exotic animal trade in Clayton County. This bust resulted in the seizure of several dangerous and prohibited animals from a single residence, including a ring-tailed lemur, alligators, tegus, and various snakes.
Did You Know?
Lemurs are among the most endangered mammals on Earth, with 95% of species at risk of extinction. Thousands are illegally taken from the wild each year, and keeping them as pets is harmful to both the animals and their owners.
Alligators and crocodiles are classified as "inherently dangerous wild animals." Due to their size and predatory nature, it is illegal to keep them as pets in Georgia.
Tegus, a large lizard species, are prohibited in Georgia due to their potential harm to native wildlife and the environment.
Clayton County ordinances limit households to a maximum of 5 animals, yet more than 20 animals were seized during this operation, including:
1 Ring-Tailed Lemur
1 American Alligator
2 Black & White Tegus
1 Timber Rattlesnake
1 Western Hog-Nosed Snake
1 Ball Python
13 Dogs
Additionally, 2.8 pounds of marijuana were confiscated during the raid.
On October 17, 2024, Jaequan Mr. Smith Devers was arrested for:
(6) counts of Possession of Wild Animals without a Permit,
(4) counts of Possession of Tools during the Commission of a Crime.
Marijuana and Possession of Marijuana over an ounce.
SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN is committed to keeping Clayton County safe—whether the threat is a serious crime or something as dangerous as harboring exotic animals illegally. This operation is a clear message to those attempting to break the law: Not in Clayton County.
