Simi Valley Police Department Receives Grant to Fight Alcohol-Related Harm
The Simi Valley Police Department has been awarded a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and administered by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). This grant aims to address alcohol-related harm in the community.
The primary objective of the grant is to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors and to curb alcohol-related crime through a variety of enforcement, educational, and prevention programs led by local law enforcement officers. Among the initiatives funded by the grant are the Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap operations.
In these programs, a minor, under the supervision of a peace officer, attempts to purchase alcohol from ABC-licensed businesses or receives it from patrons. If a clerk or patron provides alcohol to the minor, they may be cited or arrested and face fines and community service.
This grant enhances local law enforcement efforts by combining the resources of police officers and ABC agents, who possess specialized knowledge of alcoholic beverage laws. Their collaboration aims to effectively address alcohol-related issues within the community.
Funding for this initiative comes from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is responsible for regulating alcoholic beverages in the state. ABC’s mission is to provide high-quality service and ensure public safety through licensing, education, and enforcement, operating as part of the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency.
The funding from this grant will be allocated to the Simi Valley Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team, a unit within the Special Enforcement Bureau dedicated to crime suppression. This team focuses on various crimes within the city, including the enforcement of lewd conduct in public, human trafficking investigations, ABC enforcement assessments, street-level narcotics enforcement, warrant services for wanted individuals, and gang enforcement.
