Wilmington Police share news of sentencing in connection with 2018 cold case murder:

The Wilmington Police Department is sharing the below release, issued today by the Delaware Department of Justice, regarding the sentencing of a suspect in connection with a 2018 cold case murder:

-----------

DOJ secures more than two decades of prison time for violent gun offender in cold case murder

A Wilmington man has been sentenced to 23 years for convictions stemming from the 2018 murder of Richard Young. On October 18, Nasir Anderson, 24, was sentenced to 102 years in prison, suspended after 23 years followed by descending levels of probation for convictions of Murder Second Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Robbery First Degree and Conspiracy Second Degree in New Castle County Superior Court. The sentence follows a guilty plea and a six-year investigation into his involvement in the 2018 home invasion, and subsequent murder of Richard Young in the 2300 block of Market Street Wilmington, DE.

“This case, which lingered for years, demonstrates our dedication in pursuing justice for victims and their families,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “We recognize the pain and loss endured by Richard Young's loved ones, and we hope this outcome provides them with some measure of closure. Along with our partners in law enforcement, our office remains committed to ensuring that those who commit violent crimes are held accountable, and we will continue to support efforts to resolve unsolved cases. Let this serve as a reminder that justice may take time, but it will not be denied."

“The guilty plea and sentencing that resulted from this investigation underscore how hard our investigators work to bring justice in each of their cases,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “This is also another example of our Cold Case Unit continuing investigations into unsolved cases.”

On February 25, 2018, Anderson and an accomplice entered Young’s apartment, armed with handguns and black ski masks, intending to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Young was shot multiple times and later died from his wounds. Wilmington Police investigated the crime and continued the investigation as years passed and the case went cold. The WPD Cold Case Unit led the follow-up investigation in 2023, leading to the identification of Nasir Anderson as a suspect in the crime. The second suspect in this case has been identified as a person who was killed in July 2018.
